ASTAR’s John Dasburg heads up Entrepreneurship Week for International MBA students.

“By far, it was the most productive week I’ve ever experienced,” said Summia Chaudhry, a student in the International MBA (IMBA) program at Florida International University (FIU). “We received advice from an amazing lineup of experts, including John Dasburg.”

“Global Entrepreneurship Week: Secrets of New Business Development” took place on FIU’s campus in April 2011. The Eugenio Pino and Family Global Entrepreneurship Center presented the event.

“Joyce J. Elam, executive dean of the College of Business Administration, wanted a program specifically to expose IMBA students to the wisdom of experienced professionals,” said clinical professor Dileep Rao, who organized the event.

Rao assembled a team of seasoned and successful business leaders to share their advice and experience with the 100 students at the weeklong program. Topics included “Building Ventures in a Global Environment,” “Trends in Global Entrepreneurial Media” and “How to Build a $100 Million+ Company.”

The captivating keynote address of John H. Dasburg, chairman and CEO of ASTAR USA and former president of Burger King and Northwest Airlines, was attended by FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg.

“John Dasburg had great advice about the decision-making process entrepreneurs go through,” said Chaudhry, who has her own 10-year plan for starting a business. “Plus, he was extremely motivational.”

Student Jared Leichner agreed.

“His presentation really inspired me to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams with full fervor,” Leichner said.

Other presenters included Lloyd Sigel, founder of Lloyd’s Barbecue; Maria Elena Ibanez, founder of Intermark Foods; and additional entrepreneurs, lawyers, publishers and experts.

IMBA student Michael Gibby called the week an important learning exercise.

“We got an in-depth view into the lives of successful business people,” he said.

“Modesto A. Maidique, former FIU president and executive director of the FIU Center for Leadership, served as an excellent speaker,” Rao said, adding that the center also provided funds for an award to the student team that delivered the best recap at the week’s conclusion.
