Two service-focused apps and a human resource consultancy took the top spots in the FIU Track of the 2020 Miami Herald Startup Pitch Competition, which offers entrepreneurs exposure that could lead to partnerships and funding that may get a venture off the ground or help grow a young startup.
Judges described this year’s submissions showed greater depth, diversity and innovation. The FIU Track, one of three in the competition, is open to all FIU students, faculty and alumni.
Recent FIU Business graduate Anthony Varas won First Place for his new designated driver service. MBA student Stephanie Jones took Second Place for her online application that connects visitors with businesses and cultural institutions in South Florida neighborhoods.
Alexandra Torres Rodriguez, an FIU Business Master of Science in Human Resource Management (MSHRM) alumna, won Third Place for her recently started human resource platform that helps small businesses. The FIU Business online MSHRM program is ranked No. 2 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The MSRM program is ranked No. 1 in the U.S. by HR.com.
