FIU Business launches new mobile app for Apple and Android devices.

Getting information quickly to a mobile generation means one thing: offering it on mobile devices.

That led Florida International University’s (FIU) College of Business to develop a mobile app for both Apple and Android devices. Free of charge and available starting this week, the app features information about college degree offerings, programs and news, a calendar of all events, and access to FIU Business’ six social media platforms.

The new app will give students the ability to quickly access information designed to strengthen their college experience, including listings for job and career seminars, special lectures and competitions, and other new offerings.

“The growth of mobile usage has skyrocketed in this country, and it’s usage is even greater in our international markets,” said Luisa Perez, director of marketing at the College of Business. “We knew we needed to develop a mobile app as a singular location for the information that is accessed the most, including event calendars, news stories on our BizNews portal, and our social media outlets. Our new app is a ‘one-stop shop’ to learn about college events, and an excellent complement to the comprehensive information we maintain on our website.”

Technology enables a faster look at college programs.

Developed by the college’s Web team, Alexis Puentes, Osmel Matos and Christina Frith, the app also enables users to contact the college with any questions.

“We share much of our news and photos through live feeds on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn and Flickr, all of which are accessible on the app,” team leader Puentes said.  “We also designed a scrolling ‘features’ section at the top of the app screen that can be used to promote key college events.”

An in-house marketing campaign, the FIU Business App: For Great Minds on the Move, launched Tuesday at the college. To date, 260 users have downloaded the app.

While primarily designed for internal use at the college, Perez sees the app as relevant to a wider community. “We hope this will be used by not only students, faculty and staff here at the college, but by alumni and members of the South Florida community who want to strengthen their connection to FIU Business,” Perez said. “It’s also a great way for parents and prospective students to get a quick glance at all we offer here.”

“The app is really easy to use and can be very helpful to students,” said recent alum Mario Morales Redondo (BBA ’13). “There are so many times that students don’t know what events are on the college’s calendar. With this app, it’s easy to find out about things like alumni events, company recruiting, career fairs and other events.”
