They did it! Commencement marks achievement of nearly 1,000 College of Business grads.

Years of study, determination and hard work paid off for 987 students in the College of Business at Florida International University (FIU) when they were awarded degrees at the Spring 2016 Commencement.

President Mark B. Rosenberg welcomed the graduates and their proud families and friends to ceremonies held Monday, May 9, 2016, at the FIU Arena, located at Modesto A. Maidique Campus. Acting Dean Jose Aldrich presented diplomas to the business students.

At the afternoon commencement ceremony, 674 students from the R. Kirk Landon Undergraduate School of Business were recognized for earning a bachelor degree. The FIU Medallion, the Outstanding Alumni Award, was presented to College of Business alumnus Malcolm Butters (MSRE ’83). Butters is president and co-founder of Butters Construction & Development, Inc., a real-estate firm engaged in the construction, development, investment, management and leasing of office, industrial and retail properties. He established the Malcolm Butters Real Estate Scholarship Award to help pay off graduate school debt for FIU real estate students.

At the evening commencement ceremony, 312 students from the Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Graduate School of Business received a master’s degree. Jose Mauricio Galli Geleilate (PhD ’16) was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business Administration.

At both ceremonies, faculty members from the College of Business performed The National Anthem and the FIU Alma Mater: Donald Roomes and Louis Melbourne, along with FIU alumna Belinda Gunn.

College employees add degrees to their list of accomplishments.

Andrea A. Llanes (BA ’16), a student assistant in the office of the Alvah H. Chapman Jr Graduate School of Business, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations with a minor in Business. She will now become a recruitment assistant in the same office.

Jose Mauricio Geleilate (PHD ’16), an instructor in the College of Business, was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy in Business Administration. He will become an assistant professor of Strategic Management at University of Massachusetts – Lowell.

Laura Osorno (PMBA ’16, BA ’05), an operations coordinator in the Office of Executive and Professional MBA Programs, received her Professional MBA Flex degree.

Luis Terrazas (BS ’15), a course developer for Graduate Web-Assisted, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering. He has accepted a position as a tech support engineer for Skyline.

Lorena C. Velazquez (MS ’15, BS ’13), an admissions officer in the Office of Admissions, Recruitment and Financial Aid, received a Master of Science in Higher Education Administration.

Anthony Zaldivar (BA ’16), a student assistant in the office of Management and International Business, received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance.
