School of Accounting

Clinical Associate Professor Kenneth R. Henry has been named chair of the newly formed Global Education Forum of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. The Education Global Forum will be added to the group’s Global Forums line-up starting February 2017, with participants debating and addressing key issues in global accounting education.

Department of Finance

PhD Program Director and Associate Professor Edward R. Lawrence co-authored a paper titled “The Effect of Prior Investment Outcomes on Future Investment Decisions: Is There a Gender Difference?” published in the Review of Finance, November 6, 2016. The paper was co-authored by Professor Arun J. Prakash and former FIU PhD student Ann Marie Hibbert.

Assistant Professor Yeonju Jang’s paper titled “The effect of TARP on the propagation of real estate shocks: Evidence from geographically diversified banks” was accepted for publication in the Journal of Banking and Finance.

Assistant Professor Arun Upadhyay co-authored a paper titled “The Determinants and Performance Impact of Outside Board Leadership” published in the August 2016 issue of the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.

Manuel Lasaga, clinical professor, was interviewed on CNN Dinero discussing “La economía de Peru” (the Peruvian economy) on December 22, 2016.

Department of Information Systems and Business Analytics

Assistant Professor Pouyan Esmaeil Zadeh co-authored a paper titled “Health Information Exchange (HIE): A literature review, assimilation pattern and a proposed classification for a new policy approach” in the December 2016 issue of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics.

Instructor Attila Hertelendy has authored a paper titled “Going Online: A Pedagogical Assessment of Bioethics Distance Education Courses for Health Sciences Professionals” which will be published in an upcoming edition of the International Journal of Online Pedagogy and Course Design.

Assistant Professor Lina Bouayad, co-author of “Early Detection of Side Effects and Adverse Reactions: Mining of Patient Secure Messages,” presented preliminary research as a poster at the American Medical Informatics Association Annual Symposium, which took place November 4-8 in Chicago. Bouayad, co-author of “One Class at a Time: Experiments with Cascading Classifiers in Healthcare,” also presented preliminary research as a poster at CEGS N-GRID Shared-Tasks and Workshop on Challenges in Natural Language Processing for Clinical Data at the same annual event.

Department of Management & International Business

Professor Jerry Haar wrote an op-ed column titled “Free Trade at the Crossroads,” published in Latin Trade, November 4, 2016. Haar also penned a column titled “What Fidel Castro’s Death Won’t Change About Cuba’s Economic Outlook” published by the Wall Street Journal, November 29. Haar gave the keynote address titled “Competitive Challenges in a Fast-Changing Global Economy,” at the BKR International Accounting Conference in Santiago, Chile on November 14, and gave a book presentation sponsored by the Wilson Center and the Council of the Americas on December 2 at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. He also gave a talk on global innovation at the Kogod School of Business at American University in Washington D.C., on November 30.

Graduate Teaching Assistant Ivan Pineda discussed the impact of the U.S. presidential elections on the economy of Latin America on the Leopoldo Castillo-hosted show “Alo Ciudadano” on November 17, 2016, in connection with Pineda being a signatory to “Venezuelan Academics and Researchers pronouncement about Venezuela’s credit rating in International markets,” published November 7 on Venezuelan news site Prodavinci.

Professor Juan I. Sanchez has co-authored a paper titled “Does paternalistic leadership promote innovative behavior? The interaction between authoritarianism and benevolence,” which has been accepted for publication at the Journal of Applied Social Psychology. Sanchez has also co-authored a book chapter titled “The Microfoundations of Global Innovation: Disrupting the Balance Between Centripetal and Centrifugal Forces” that has been accepted for publication in Human Capital and Innovation, published by Palgrave Macmillan UK.

Department of Marketing

Visiting Instructor Gustavo Mosquera was interviewed in an NBC6 story about Cyber Monday on November 28, 2016. Mosquera also appeared on Digalo Aqui, a business-focused show on El Venezolano TV on November 22.

Nancy Richmond, instructor, was included in the December 2016 issue of CEO World Magazine’s list of “Social Media Marketing Influencers to Follow on Twitter in 2017.”

Tibor and Sheila Hollo School of Real Estate

School Director and Professor William Hardin and Faculty Director Eli Beracha, (along with Hilla Skiba of Colorado State University) have co-authored a paper titled “Real Estate Market Segmentation: Hotels as Exemplar” that has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics.
