Jimmy Carmenate

School of Accounting

Clinical Instructor Jimmy Carmenate successfully defended his dissertation and was awarded his doctorate in business administration from Kennesaw State University. The university also named him Outstanding DBA Graduate, and he won the 2017 Outstanding DBA-Accounting Research Award.

Instructor David Barman has been named a 2017 Legal Elite Attorney, which represents, based on the votes of Florida Bar members, approximately the top 1 percent of Florida attorneys, as reported in Florida Trend magazine on June 21, 2017.

Finance

Clinical Instructor and Director of the Capital Markets Lab Flavio Carrillo was quoted in a story titled “NBC 6 Responds Helps Man Desperate for Answers About Pension,” which ran on NBC 6 South Florida, June 22, 2017.

Clinical Professor Manuel Lasaga was quoted in a segment titled “ ‘Show Me the Money’ Says Woman to Bank about $15,000,” which ran on NBC 6 South Florida, May 19, 2017.

Department of Information Systems and Business Analytics

Associate Professor Karlene Cousins served as a judge for the FIU track of the 2017 Herald Business Plan Challenge, held in May.

Assistant Professor Paulo Gomes was the keynote speaker on Innovation Healthcare at the Jackson Health System Annual retreat of the IT Division, held at the University of Miami Alumni Center, June 9, 2017.

Department of Management & International Business

Clinical Professor Seema Pissaris served as a judge for the FIU track of the 2017 Herald Business Plan Challenge, held in May.

Clinical Professor Jerry Haar wrote an article titled “In a Trade War with Canada, Florida Loses,” which ran in the Miami Herald on May 9, 2017. Haar also authored a story titled “Listen up, grads: Hard truths about today’s labor market,” which ran in the Orlando Sentinel, May 21, 2017.

Professor Juan I. Sanchez was ranked 46 among 8,603 authors who are cited in industrial and organizational psychology textbooks, as reported in an upcoming article in Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practice, which lists the 2 percent most commonly cited authors in the field.

A study by Department Chair William Newburry and colleagues titled “Attitudes towards women’s career advancement in Latin America: The moderating impact of perceived company international proactiveness,” recently published in the Journal of International Business Studies, 2017, was featured in the Latin America and Caribbean blog of The London School of Economics and Political Science in a story titled “Perceptions of firm internationalisation drive changes in Latin American attitudes towards women’s career advancement,” which went live May 16, 2017.

Department of Marketing and Logistics

Chair and Professor Anthony Miyazaki was quoted in a story titled “Negative Review Impacts Unhappy Customer’s Effort to Get a Refund,” which ran on NBC 6 South Florida May 16, 2017.

Assistant Professor Jayati Sinha co-authored a paper titled “Speaking to the heart: Social exclusion and reliance on feelings versus reasons in persuasion,” which is slated to appear in the October issue of the Journal of Consumer Psychology, and was the topic of an article titled “A new way out of the cycle of rejection,” which ran in online news service EurekAltert, June 29, 2017.

Instructor Wendy Guess was quoted in a story titled “8 Ways for Baby Boomers to Maintain Their Agility – stretching, walking and maintaining good posture are part of the regimen,” which ran in US News & World Report, June 12, 2017.

Tibor and Sheila Hollo School of Real Estate

Assistant Professor Eli Beracha’s article titled “Are High CAP Rate Properties Better Investments?” was recently accepted for publication for the special real estate issue of the Journal of Portfolio Management, to be published later this year.

Instructor Suzanne Hollander participated in the Faculty Development in International Business Program held in Latin America and sponsored by the University of Miami’s Center for International Business Education and Research, which took place in Peru and other Latin America locales held June 10-to 25. Hollander was also honored with an award at the event.
