Faculty Notes: March 2012

Executive Dean Joyce J. Elam was profiled in an article titled “Florida MBA Standouts” in Florida Trend on March 16, 2012.

School of Accounting

Antoinette L. Smith, assistant professor, and Monica Chiarini Tremblay, assistant professor, Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems, were two of the co-authors on a paper titled “IT governance characteristics, electronic medical records sophistication, and financial performance in U.S. hospitals: an empirical investigation,” accepted for publication in Decision Sciences Journal, a premier publication.

A paper titled “Material weakness remediation and earnings quality: a detailed examination by type of control deficiency” co-authored by Kimberly Westermann, assistant professor, was published in Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, a premier publication.

Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems

Neera Bhansali, visiting clinical assistant professor, had an article titled “The Changing Landscape for Health Informatics Professionals Warrants New Training” published in the March issue of South Florida Hospital News.

Gloria Deckard, associate professor, served as a panelist on Health Information Exchange in Florida at the March joint meeting of the TreasureCoast Florida  Healthcare Executives and the Central North Florida Health Information Systems Society Chapters in West Palm Beach Florida on March 28. She presented an update on the evaluation research she and Monica Chiarini Tremblay, assistant professor, are conducting for the Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA).

Monica Chiarini Tremblay, assistant professor and Antoinette L. Smith, assistant professor, School of Accounting, were two of the co-authors on a paper titled “IT governance characteristics, electronic medical records sophistication, and financial performance in U.S. hospitals: An Empirical Investigation,” accepted for publication in Decision Sciences Journal, a premier publication.

Department of Finance and Real Estate

A co-authored working paper titled “Impacts of unionization on employment, product quality and productivity: regression discontinuity evidence from nursing homes,” by Min Chen, clinical assistant professor, was published on the home page of the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Ken H. Johnson, associate professor, has been quoted in several publications recently: “Palm Beach County home prices lag U.S. average” in the Palm Beach Post; and twice on CNN Money Home buying much cheaper than renting on March 21st and “Home prices fall to 2002 levels” on March 27th.

Department of Management and International Business

Jerry Haar, professor, had an article titled “Brazil: a cautionary note” published in Latin Business Chronicle on March 20th. He was quoted in “Educational provision vs. labor demand,” an article in Revista Summa on February 14th. The business magazine is published in Costa Rica and distributed in Colombia, among other places.

Dileep Rao, clinical professor, was quoted in “When starting a business is the only choice,” on Minnesota Public Radio’s website on March 5th.
