Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems

Stylianos Drakatos, adjunct, learned his course, Application of Quantitative Methods (QM) in Business, received QM certification.

Department of Finance

Deanne Butchey (PhD ’05), senior lecturer, was quoted in “Florida International University attempts to infuse global learning across the curriculum,” in Inside Higher Ed on February 2, 2013.

“Debt IPO Waves,” a co-authored paper by Xiaoquan Jiang, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, won the World Scientific Publishing award for an outstanding paper in corporate finance research. Given by the Midwest Finance Association (MFA)—whose conference program includes 384 papers—the award will be presented at the annual MFA membership meeting March 15, 2013.

Emmanuel N. Roussakis, professor, has received a U.S. Department of State Fulbright award in Indonesia this term. It is the fourth consecutive year he has won the award; this time to present lectures at the graduate and undergraduate levels, conduct a faculty seminar on case study writing and assist in the development and/or assessment of academic curricula at Brawijaya University, in Malang, Indonesia. Prior to his stay in Indonesia, he has been invited to visit Ramkhamhaeng University, in Bangkok, Thailand, where he will lecture graduate and undergraduate students throughout the month of March.

Department of Management and International Business

A presentation by Sumit K. Kundu, professor and James K. Batten Eminent Scholar Chair in International Business, at the Society for Global Business and Economic Development 2012 conference, has been accepted as a book chapter to be published in July 2013.
Modesto A. Maidique, professor and Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Eminent Scholar Chair in Leadership, along with the Center for Leadership, hosted Miami Leadership Summit IV, a gathering of more than 60 of Miami’s business, community and civic leaders on February 12, 2013. The focus of this summit was civic engagement and how the citizens of Miami can help to “Engage, Miami!” He wrote an op-ed piece, What greater Miami can do to achieve greatness, summarizing the results of the four Miami Leadership Summits,which was published on February 17, 2013 by The Miami Herald.

Dileep Rao, clinical professor, was interviewed on February 14, 2013 for a WPLG-10 story on new graduates who take the entrepreneurial route.

An article by Juan I. Sanchez, professor and Knight-Ridder Byron Harless Chair in Management, titled “The Link between National Paid Leave Policy and Work-Family Conflict among Married Working Parents” has been accepted for publication in Applied Psychology: An International Review. He presented a paper titled “Understanding Nepotism in a Collectivistic Context: The Effects of Attitudes and Attributions” at the 4th World Business Ethics Forum (WBEF), December 16-18, 2012, held at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). He also delivered two invited talks: “Integrated Talent Management in Nonprofit Organizations: Leveraging Strategic Leadership” for the Hong Kong Council of Social Services in Hong Kong, on December 17, 2012 and “Human Resources Sits at The Grown-up’s Table: Competency Models for Organizational Competitiveness” at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid on January 24, 2013. The recently published APA Handbook of Assessment includes a chapter by him entitled “Job Analysis for Assessment.” Finally, he attended the annual meeting of the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Service Board of Examiners on February 14-15, 2013, in Washington, D.C.

Department of Marketing

Alexandra Aguirre-Rodriguez, assistant professor, has had two articles accepted for publication: “The Role of Persuasion Knowledge in Scarcity Appeal Effectiveness” in Journal of Advertising, and, with co-authors, “Exploring ethnic consumer response to crossover brand extensions” in Journal of Business Research.

Peter Magnusson, assistant professor, has been named program chair for the Academy of International Business (AIB)-Southeast’s annual conference, which will take place October 31-November 3, 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Tibor and Sheila Hollo School of Real Estate

Research by Ken H. Johnson, associate professor and Tibor and Sheila Hollo Research Fellow, was featured in “Advertising ‘not a short sale’ pays big dividends long run” in Miami Today’s issue of the week of February 21, 2013.
