School of Accounting

David W. Barman (JD ’05), instructor, was the guest speaker at the Aventura Inventors and Entrepreneur Group meeting on February 11, 2014. His topic was “Intellectual Property Law for the New Entrepreneur.”

Manny Pravia (MST ’92), adjunct, presented a Federal Tax Update at the CubanAmerican CPA Association Annual Tax Update Seminar in Miami, Florida on February 8, 2014.

Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems

A paper co-authored by George Marakas (PhD ’96), visiting professor, was published in the Information Systems Research journal. The article is entitled “PLS and Models with Formatively-Specified Endogenous Constructs: A Cautionary Note.”  Marakas was also voted Best Professor by two separate groups: the most recent graduating MBA cohort in the Panama program and the current PMBA graduating cohort.

Department of Finance

A paper co-authored by Xiaoquan Jiang, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, was selected as one of the “Outstanding Articles” published in the Journal of Financial Research in 2013. The article was entitled “Debt IPO Waves, Investor Sentiment, Market Conditions, and Issue Quality.”

Helen K. Simon, senior instructor, has been named the 2014 Practitioner Thought Leader winner by The Retirement Income Industry Association (RIIA). Simon will be presented with an award at the RIIA Spring Conference to be held March 17 and 18, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to her experience and expertise, Simon’s paper, “Financial Behaviors of Clients in or Near Retirement: What Advisers Need to Know,” to be published in the Spring 2014 issue of the Retirement Management Journal, was cited by the association as instrumental in the decision.

Department of Management and International Business

Sumit K. Kundu, professor and James K. Batten Eminent Scholar Chair in International Business, has been elected to serve for three years on the Executive Board of the Academy of International Business (AIB), as vice president, Administration. He will join the board in August, 2014 at AIB’s annual meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

Ronaldo Parente, associate professor, has been elected to serve as associate program chair for the Global Strategy Interest Group at the Strategic Management Society.

Seema Pissaris, professor, was profiled in a February 28, 2014 article in Florida Trend entitled “Graduate-level MBA Professors Share Real World Experience” by Janet Ware.

Also, Pissaris presented Eyetalker, the FIU social entrepreneurship project, at the International Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conference in Bangkok, Thailand on February 6 and 7, 2014.

Department of Marketing

Assistant Professor Peter Magnusson was a panelist in a session on “Developments and Opportunities in Global Marketing Research” at the Winter American Marketing Association (AMA) conference in Orlando, February 21-23. Other panelists included the marketing area editor of Journal of International Business Studies, Dan Bello; the editor of the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Tomas Hult; and the editor of Journal of International Marketing, Costas Katsikeas.
