A group of graduates of Florida International University (FIU) in Broward County started the New Year having fun and making connections at Bokamper’s Sports Grill in Miramar. The event on January 8, 2015 was organized by two groups: the Broward Alumni Chapter, which serves all Panthers living or working in Broward County, and the Business Alumni Chapter, which organizes programs and events for alumni of FIU’s College of Business.

“Meeting other alumni adds value to our degrees,” said J. David Lenis (BBA ’12), a financial advisor with Morgan Stanley Wealth Management and a member of both chapters. “All things being equal, I’d rather work with an FIU alum. Events like this help all of us meet more fellow FIU graduates and reconnect with those I already know.”

Lenis was one of the chapters’ board members who helped Daniel Farmer (BBA ’72) organize the get-together, with about fifty alumni in attendance. Event planning took place at the new FIU @ I75 facility in Miramar.

Giving short welcomes to the alumni were Lenis, Bert Mahecha (BS ‘97) and Amir Vasquez (MSF ’12).

Broward County alumni can expect more local events.

“We’re reaching out to the strong number of alumni in Broward County by hosting events at a location convenient to them,” says Yanyn San Luis (BBA ’10), assistant director, Alumni Relations. “The turnout on January 8 shows there is high interest.”

“For those of us living and working in Broward County, it’s not always easy to get to the Miami-Dade area,” said Lenis. “We’re getting great feedback to have more Broward County events.”

The Business Alumni Chapter is planning an alumni get-together at 6:30 p.m. on March 12, 2015 at Chima Brazilian Steakhouse in Ft. Lauderdale.
