Top Ten times ten—FIU’s AMA named as a top chapter for the tenth year.

It’s tough to earn Top Ten recognition in the American Marketing Association (AMA) collegiate competition. After all, 300 chapters are vying for the top slots of bronze, silver, gold or platinum status.

But at the 34th annual International Collegiate Chapter Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, the AMA from the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU) was named as a Top Ten Chapter for the tenth consecutive year, this time achieving gold designation. AMA at FIU has been in one of the top five slots for three straight years.

Twenty-one AMA members represented FIU Business at AMA’s 34th annual International Collegiate Chapter Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, at which the chapter was named as a Top Ten chapter for the 10th consecutive year.

“AMA on campus is a powerhouse organization, and this award is a testament to the incredible work ethic of our students,” said chapter advisor Tim Dugan Birrittella.

President Michael Perez accepted the award at the closing ceremony of the weekend conference on March 24, 2012. Excellence in six areas—chapter planning, membership, fundraising, communications, community service and professional development—is required to earn gold status.

“AMA offers exceptional opportunities for us to learn, grow and achieve,” Perez said. “Earning gold was the ultimate moment for the 21 members who attended the conference.”

Perez was also recognized for his work in establishing the President’s Council, a new communications vehicle for chapter presidents.

Conference filled with events and more awards.

“Marketing Always Evolving” was the theme of the conference, which drew an attendance of 1,200. The event is always held in New Orleans; this year, FIU served as the host school, moderating sessions and taking on other tasks.

The weekend was packed with social activities, exhibitions and presentations by marketing professionals from McDonalds, Carnival Cruise Lines, Miami Heat and other companies. Jeff Zelaya (BBA ’11), a former member of AMA at FIU, returned to the conference now as an executive, to conduct a social media workshop.
